Sustainability
Matters
We’ve taken the initiative on identifying and supporting innovations to make natural gas sustainable and environmentally friendly for over 25 years. Additionally, through our Greener Life® program, GNG customers have offset more than 500 million pounds of carbon emissions.†
Offset 500 million pounds of carbon emissions.
GNG customers play a vital role in protecting the environment, together offsetting over 500 million pounds of CO2e through the Greener Life program since its inception. For 25 years we’ve been leading the way to a safer, cleaner Georgia.
Greener Life is now enhanced with Certified Low Emissions gas.
Certified Low Emissions natural gas is responsibly sourced through low emissions processes used to produce natural gas. Georgia Natural Gas partners with MiQ, a not-for-profit organization leading the way in methane emissions performance monitoring.
Earth Day Electronics Recycling Event at Lenox Square
We maintained our annual tradition of electronic recycling by once again hosting an event at Lenox Square. This year we recycled 45,000 pounds of old, unwanted electronics. To date, GNG has helped recycle more than 100,000 pounds of electronics and kept them out of landfills.
SouthStar Energy Services partners with historically Black colleges and universities in Georgia and Florida through Greener Life for Business
SouthStar Energy partnered with two historically Black colleges and universities across its multi-state business footprint, reducing their carbon footprint through SouthStar’s Greener Life® for Business program. This partnership highlights the importance of emphasizing sustainability and environmental responsibility to the next generation of leaders.
Georgia Natural Gas® partners with local middle and high school students to recycle glass products.
Georgia Natural Gas® teamed with Georgia Public Service Commission Tim Echols and Jason Shaw to encourage middle and high school students across the state to collect glass for recycling. More than 35,000 pounds of glass were recycled and kept out of landfills. The schools that recycled the largest amounts of glass were recognized and honored at an awards ceremony sponsored by Georgia Natural Gas held at Zoo Atlanta.
GNG becomes the official natural gas provider of the Hawks and State Farm Arena
We joined forces with the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena in a sustainability-focused partnership. The two organizations joined our Greener Life® for Business program, which will use carbon offsets to balance 100% of carbon emissions from the venue’s natural gas usage. State Farm Arena was the first sports and live entertainment venue to achieve TRUE Platinum zero waste certification, and we’re proud to contribute to their commitment to sustainability.
Georgia Natural Gas Helps Protect Fernbank's Natural Habitat
Volunteers from GNG help clear potato vines, a fast-growing invasive species, from Fernbank Forest. Invasive species outcompete native trees, plants and animals, which cause harm to the forest’s ecological health. The volunteers removed approximately 10 debris bags of invasive plants.
Earth Day Electronics Recycling Event Hosted at Lenox Square
Continuing our annual tradition of electronic recycling, we held another recycling event at Lenox Square. This year we recycled over 29,000 pounds of old, unwanted electronics. To date, GNG has helped recycle more than 90,000 pounds in total.
GNG Adds Hydrofluorocarbon Recycling to Greener Life Program.
GNG added the A-Gas V5 Voluntary Emission Reduction project to the Greener Life project portfolio. This project recycles Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, HFC refrigerants can have an impact up to 1,430 times worse than carbon dioxide.

GNG is a fixture in your Georgia community that has taken the initiative on identifying and supporting innovations to make natural gas sustainable and environmentally friendly for over 25 years. We’re proud to partner with iconic Georgia organizations like the Atlanta Hawks, Georgia Aquarium, The HIGH Museum, Zoo Atlanta, and more.
It takes a lot of energy to maintain the habitats at the Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in North America. As the first Greener Life for Business partner, the Aquarium has been able to share GNG’s message of greener options and carbon offset opportunities with millions of guests every year. GNG also developed new interactive games to educate visitors on sea otters – and their pivotal role in protecting carbon-reducing kelp forests.

Organizations like the Atlanta Boy Scouts, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, and the Special Olympics participate in our Greener Life for Business program to reduce their emissions footprint while staying true to their values.
Understanding Your Carbon Footprint Burning natural gas creates greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. A single carbon offset represents the removal or capture of 1 metric ton of carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2e) gases. Because different gases and chemicals have different impacts on the environment, CO2e is used as the standard measurement for greenhouse gases.
GNG will track the amount of therms of natural gas Greener Life customers use and will calculate the amount of CO2e released because of that usage. We will then retire an equivalent amount of carbon offsets. In this way, you can be sure your natural gas usage was made carbon neutral.

Greener Life is now enhanced with Certified Low Emissions gas. Greener Life customers like you are already making the natural gas usage in their homes carbon neutral. But now, you have another reason to feel better about your carbon footprint. With the benefits of Certified Low Emissions gas, you are reducing your carbon footprint where the gas is produced, too. GNG takes our environmental stewardship seriously. That’s why we’re proud to add this new benefit to our Greener Life program at no additional cost to you.
What is Certified Low Emissions gas?
Certified Low Emissions natural gas is responsibly sourced from companies who use low emissions processes to produce natural gas. Certified natural gas producers have their facilities audited by independent experts who make sure producers’ methane emissions are below specified levels and that they use industry best practices to minimize methane leakage and limit environmental impact.
Georgia Natural Gas partners with MiQ, a not-for-profit organization that is one of the leading certifiers of natural gas. MiQ’s Methane Standard has been adopted by some of the world’s biggest natural gas producers. To determine the methane emissions performance of facilities where natural gas is produced, MiQ uses a grading method that is transparent, robust and based on data. Independent auditors perform assessments of producer facilities.
*12 months of free Greener Life is applicable to qualified customers who sign up on Greener Life between 12/05/24 and 01/04/25. Greener Life service charge applies after the expiration of the 12 months period.
†Aggregate pounds for the period from 09/29/2019 through 08/19/2024 . 500,000,000 pounds of CO2e equals the removal or capture of 226,798 metric tons of Co2e from the atmosphere and equals 226,798 total carbon offsets retired on behalf of GNG customers.
